Elijah Robert Poole, born in Sandersville, Georgia, was the son of Mariah (Hall) and William Poole Sr, who were sharecroppers. His father was also a Baptist lay preacher. Muhammad was the self-proclaimed Messenger of Allah, and the leader of the Nation of Islam from 1934 until his death in 1975. He converted to Islam in the early 1930s after taking part in various black nationalist movements and attending a speech on Islam and black empowerment by Wallace Fard Muhammad.
