Jane Alice Peters was born to a wealthy family in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The third child and only daughter of Elizabeth Jayne “Bessie” (Knight) and Frederic Christian Peters, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother in 1914 when her parents separated (but never divorced). Her father’s continued financial support allowed the family to live comfortably, and they settled into an apartment near Venice Boulevard.

She is best known for her film career and marriages to William Powell and Clark Gable. She died in 1942 at age 33 in a plane crash while on a tour to sell war bonds. A liberty ship, SS Carole Lombard, was named for her in 1944.
